In the Know: Local Community Happenings
Our MUFSD presented their Diversity Equity Plan in response to current local issues of racism though, prior to the formation of the DET, there was some equity work in place in the school district. Much of the plan is inspired by the NY State Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education Framework.
Congratulations to Jarrett Winchester, Lavet Allen and Leigh Anne McNellie for leading our community in the creation of the stunning Black Lives Matter mural near Mamaroneck’s Columbus Park. READ about their journey to get it made. Here are other ways to stay involved with the BLM movement nationally and locally.
Intimate Conversations for Hispanic Heritage month with Monica Trujillo. Monica is a proud Uruguayan-American and a very active member in Larchmont and Mamaroneck where she raised her teens, who are now grown. Whether she’s working on the food insecurity efforts in the schools, with CRC or researching Covid in our water in Westchester County, Monica is a local hero! Dr. Trujillo is a biology professor at CUNY and a CURE leader.
These organizations are being honored at this year’s
CRC Gala on November 19th from 6:30-7:30.

COVID-19 has disproportionately affected Black people and the Latinx community, both of whom have experienced higher rates of illness and death than white Americans. Decades of history of a racist caste system have led to current inequities in housing, healthcare and employment for these communities. Many don't have the luxury of working from home, if they are working at all. Watch the video to learn more about this issue in our own community. From this need, The Coalition for Community was born which encompasses the work of CURE, Community Resource Center, First Methodist Church, Larchmont Avenue Church, Larchmont Friends of the Family, Larchmont Mamaroneck Hunger Task Force, Larchmont Temple, Mamaroneck-Larchmont PTA Council, STEM Alliance of Larchmont-Mamaroneck, St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, St John’s Episcopal Church, St. John’s Lutheran, St Thomas Episcopal Church, Washingtonville Housing Alliance, the Village of Mamaroneck, the Town of Mamaroneck and the Village of Larchmont.
